In this section we will be highlighting some of the works published by us since our last Catalogue in June 2010, alerting readers to works that we are proposing to issue in the near and foreseeable future, and to invite expressions of interest in them! We are a very demand-driven firm, so several enquiries for the same piece will always accelerate its appearance in print. There are always plans afoot for further publications by our “house composers”, both contemporary (including Jeremy Filsell, Sebastian Forbes, Patrick Gowers, Francis Grier, Nicholas Jackson and Barry Rose) and classic (Parry, Stanford, Charles Wood and Karg-Elert).
Jeremy Filsell
We will be bringing out Jeremy’s Windsor Evening Service, a companion setting to the Windsor Te Deum & Jubilate which we already publish.
Francis Grier
We are delighted that Francis Grier has decided to place his recent and forthcoming compositions with us. Several anthems of his are already in print from us, and there are exciting plans ahead. The Missa Spiritus Sancti, commissioned by St Paul’s Cathedral, was first performed there last Whitsunday by the Cathedral Choir and members of the City of London Sinfonia.. It is written for SATB soloists and choir, with accompaniment of Oboe (doubling Cor Anglais), Horn, Harp, ‘Cello, Timpani & Percussion. All performing material is now available.
There are also further plans to issue a work commissioned by King’s College, Cambridge for performance next year, and also his magnum opus The Passion of Jesus of Nazareth. We will also be continuing our programme of issues of shorter church music works of his, including a further setting of the Mass and an Evening Service written for the Choristers of St Albans Abbey.
C V Stanford
Our only recent reissue of his is the String Quartet no 2 in A minor op 45, and we are expecting to add to our publications of his piano and chamber music over the coming months. Of other large-scale works, we have in preparation the vocal score of the Stabat Mater, op 96.
Sigfrid Karg-Elert
Of late, we have been concentrating primarily on his harmonium music, sometimes with other instruments. While there does seem to be a revival of harmonium playing, in this country and also in Germany and the USA, it is likely to remain the case that most of his harmonium music is likely to end up being played on the organ (or sometimes piano), and church organists should remember that there is a wealth of potential organ voluntary music in SK-E’s harmonium collections, rewarding and with technical demands that are often modest. We are finding an increasing interest in the repertoire for Piano and Harmonium, and will be responding to this with further issues in the next few months.
Recent issues have included single numbers from his collection Poesien, op 35, for Piano and Harmonium Duo. If anyone out there has a copy of the Piano part to no 2 of this set, entitled Dialog, that they would be prepared to lend us, and from which we could produce a new master, we would be able to issue the set in a single volume (which would be rather cheaper!).
Our next focus will be on his violin music. Reissues over the coming months will feature his Kleine Sonate in C , op 68, the unaccompanied Sonata in Emi, op 88 and Partita in D, op 89, together with smaller accompanied works.
John Sheppard
We are proud to have been entrusted by Alan Thurlow with his edition of John Sheppard’s Latin church music.
The main reason that Sheppard is not as well known as his contemporaries Taverner, Tye and Tallis is surely the fact that his music has not been as well served in print as theirs. Cathedral music Ltd has been seekling to remedy this, firstly with David Wulstan’s two volumes in the Oxenford Imprint, and now with Alan Thurlow’s editions. The latest of these is the Missa Cantate, perhaps the biggest and best of his Mass settings. It is astonishing that there has never been till now a separate edition of this masterpiece, and we hope that this edition will help restore the reputation both of the work and its composer.
French Church Music
Our reissues of music by composers such as Vierne and Widor – some of which have brought back into circulation music that has proved impossible to obtain for many years - have proved very popular.
We are planning more issues of Masses and Motets by French composers active between around 1850 and 1930, and have commenced with two works for upper voices: the Messe Brève by Leo Delibes (1836-1891) and the Messe à Trois Voix by André Caplet (1878-1925)
We are always glad to hear of pieces that customers would like to see available again.
